First Things First

I’m grateful to my friend Miss Q for this post. My hope is that it challenges your heart as it did mine. ~ Miss Kristen

When we were growing up, we heard our moms say: “Do your homework first, and then you can play outside.”  Or maybe, “Eat your dinner; then you can have dessert.”  Either way, we came to accept that there are things we do first before we are allowed to do other things.

So it is with God. You’ve most likely heard the verse, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33 KJV). What are all these things?

Jesus is speaking here to a crowd of people about worry. They are not to worry about what they will eat, wear, etc.  He will take care of those things if they put Him first in their lives.

To make it more personal, there are things you and I want in life. That’s normal, assuming you are a living human being with actual blood running through your veins! We are all the same. We want certain things, and we have it in our heads the way things should be. No, things don’t always pan out the way we plan, but that’s not the point. God said to put Him first, and the other things will come later.

God’s main goal in this process of our waiting for things is not entirely to teach us patience, in my opinion. God wants to be first in our lives. He needs to be the most important thing. He is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). He wants our total devotion and our hearts.

Psalm 37:4 says:

Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart. (NKJV)

Once again, that means putting Him first.

My challenge for you and me is to put God first in everything we do. He commands it, and it is the way He designed it.

You can’t eat your brownie until you’ve eaten the plate of chicken and vegetables in front of you. Put Him first, and then wait on Him for the things in your heart to come true.
